Community Connections from the Beginning: Harvesting the Passions of First-Year Students
Abstract: How do you navigate a first-time effort to provide community-based learning for a large program serving 1,500 first-semester freshmen when it coincides with a pandemic? With flexibility, a host of great campus partners, and a shared commitment to providing equitable opportunities for students to learn the value of civic-mindedness. We will share our 3-year effort to create both virtual and in-person, sustainable service-learning partnerships on our large urban campus as we rolled with the ups and downs of a global pandemic. While tying service learning to other components of our Freshman Seminar course, students engaged in activities such as carbon harvesting, regenerative composting, oral history interviews, food donation drives, pop-up food pantries, art gallery assistance and archiving, social media campaigns/public service announcements, and getting out the vote during a midterm election.
Engaging Students in the Community through Technology
Abstract: Technology is instrumental in promoting and fostering community engagement. At Fresno State, we have implemented successful strategies to use technology that engages our students in community service efforts. This poster explores our successful use of various social media platforms, e-newsletters, and virtual student showcases, which have increased student service in and with community partners.
Near-Peer Mentoring in Community Engaged Work
Abstract: Explore how the University of Washington’s Community Engagement & Leadership Education (CELE) Center utilizes near-peer mentorship to enhance community and school based work, add capacity to programming, develop students’ leadership skills, and expand the “what’s next” in each individual’s journey.
Designing Live Wix Site: Using Imagery and Cultural Sites
Abstract: Learning about the impacts culture has on technology is something that I'm interested in learning because when visiting a place for information, there is some aspect of culture that is being presented. I would like to learn how to make the most of everything I see fit and what are respectful ways to send the right message to the audience I was tasked with creating a highlights website that included a menu, members, forum, zoom link, etc. Using photographs and the community engagement sites, and Hawaiʻi, itself as inspiration; I decided to capture some of what Hawaiʻi, is like. I hope to do more design based research on how culture and technology impact each other.
